Planning a first Costa Rica vacation with a baby can feel overwhelming. Here is an honest comparison of the weather, accommodations and easiest areas for a relaxed family trip.

Quick Facts
  • The trip dates of November 27 through December 2 fall around the transition from Costa Rica's green season into the dry season.
  • With only five nights and an 11-month-old, the article recommends choosing one base rather than changing hotels several times.
  • Guanacaste is recommended as one of the most practical choices, with access from Liberia International Airport.
  • Suggested areas include Papagayo or Playa Hermosa for resort convenience, Playas del Coco for nearby services, and Sámara for a relaxed beach-town experience.
  • An all-inclusive resort is best for low-planning, while a condo or serviced apartment is better when a kitchen, laundry and separate sleeping space are needed.

Is Late November Rainy or Dry in Costa Rica?

November 27 through December 2 falls right around the transition from Costa Rica's green season into the dry season. However, the experience can be very different depending on which part of the country you visit.

In Guanacaste and the northwestern Pacific region, November is normally a transition month. Rain becomes less frequent toward the end of the month, while December generally brings sunnier and drier conditions. You could still experience an afternoon shower, a cloudy morning or an occasional rainy day, so it is better to expect changing tropical weather rather than guaranteed sunshine.

The advantage is that the landscape may still look green from the recent rains, while roads and outdoor conditions usually begin improving. Temperatures remain warm, and rain showers often pass more quickly than they do during September or October.

Our honest recommendation: for these dates, Guanacaste is one of the most practical choices for a first family trip. It offers beaches, wildlife, resort options and relatively convenient access from Liberia International Airport.

Should You Visit More Than One Area?

With only five nights and an 11-month-old, we would not recommend changing hotels several times. Packing baby supplies, installing a car seat, checking in and rebuilding a sleep routine can turn a short vacation into a transportation project.

Choosing one comfortable base and taking one or two easy day trips will usually create a more enjoyable first experience. Costa Rica may look small on a map, but mountain roads, traffic and weather can make driving times feel longer than expected.

Local Expert Tip

Do not choose a remote hilltop rental only for the ocean view. With a baby, a ground-floor unit or building with an elevator, kitchen, laundry access, blackout curtains and easy paved-road access can be far more valuable.

All-Inclusive Resort or Vacation Rental?

There is no single correct answer. The best choice depends on how much convenience, space and flexibility your family needs.

Choose an All-Inclusive Resort If You Want Maximum Convenience

An all-inclusive resort can make traveling with a baby much easier because meals, drinks, pools and basic entertainment are available in one place. You do not need to drive to restaurants, shop for every meal or plan activities each day.

This option works especially well for parents who want to rest, spend most of the vacation near the beach and avoid daily logistics. Before booking, ask whether the resort provides a crib, refrigerator, bottle-warming options, highchairs, shaded pool areas and suitable food for a baby beginning solid foods.

The main disadvantage is that you may pay for activities, drinks or dining options that you will not fully use. Some large resorts also require long walks between the room, restaurants and beach, which matters when carrying a baby or using a stroller.

Choose a Vacation Rental If You Need Space and a Kitchen

A condo or vacation rental gives you more control over naps, meals and bedtime. A kitchen is useful for preparing bottles, washing baby items, storing food and making simple meals. A separate bedroom can also help parents relax without waking the baby.

The tradeoff is that you will need to organize groceries, transportation, cleaning and meals. Some beautiful rentals are located on steep hills or far from restaurants, beaches and supermarkets, so the least expensive or most scenic property is not always the easiest choice with an infant.

The Best Middle-Ground Option

For many families, the most practical choice is a family-friendly hotel, serviced apartment or condominium with breakfast, a small kitchen, laundry access and a pool. This provides more independence than a traditional hotel without requiring you to manage everything yourself.

Which Areas Are Best for a First Visit With a Baby?

1. Papagayo or Playa Hermosa: Best for an Easy Resort Vacation

The Gulf of Papagayo and Playa Hermosa are excellent choices when convenience is the priority. The area offers protected bays, resorts, villas and easy access to private transportation and organized day trips.

Papagayo is best for travelers who want a polished resort experience and do not mind spending more for comfort. Playa Hermosa provides a quieter beach-town atmosphere with a mixture of hotels, condos and restaurants.

2. Playas del Coco: Best for Services and Convenience

Playas del Coco has supermarkets, pharmacies, restaurants and a broad selection of accommodations. It can be practical when you want quick access to baby supplies and do not want to depend entirely on a resort.

The town is more active and developed than Playa Hermosa. Families who prefer quiet evenings should choose accommodation away from the busiest central streets.

3. Sámara: Best for a Relaxed Beach-Town Experience

Sámara is a friendly beach town with restaurants, small hotels, vacation rentals and a broad bay known for gentler conditions than many open-Pacific beaches. It is a good choice for families who value walkability and a laid-back atmosphere.

The disadvantage for a short first trip is the longer ground transfer from Liberia compared with northern Guanacaste. It is still a strong option, but we would choose Sámara as the only base rather than combining it with Papagayo.

Our Recommendation for This Family Trip

For November 27 through December 2, we would choose one base in Guanacaste rather than moving around the country.

Choose Papagayo or Playa Hermosa when you want the easiest arrival, resort comfort and organized transportation. Choose Playas del Coco when having supermarkets, pharmacies and restaurants nearby is important. Choose Sámara when you prefer a relaxed, independent beach-town experience and do not mind a longer transfer.

For accommodation, an all-inclusive resort is best for a low-planning vacation. A well-located condo or serviced apartment is better when a kitchen, laundry and separate sleeping space are important. Avoid isolated properties that require difficult roads or long drives for every meal.

Most importantly, do not try to see all of Costa Rica in five nights. A slower itinerary with beach time, naps and one or two gentle excursions will give your family a much better introduction to the country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will it rain every day between November 27 and December 2?

Probably not, especially in Guanacaste, but brief showers are still possible during the seasonal transition. Pack a light rain jacket and plan flexible mornings rather than assuming every day will be completely dry.

Is five nights enough for Costa Rica?

Yes, provided you choose one region. Five nights is enough for a relaxing Guanacaste beach stay with one or two easy nature experiences. It is not ideal for trying to visit Papagayo, Arenal, Monteverde and Manuel Antonio in the same trip.

Is an all-inclusive resort worth it with an 11-month-old?

It can be worth it when convenience and rest are your priorities. Having food, pools and services in one place reduces planning, although you should confirm that the room and resort setup meet your baby's needs.

Do we need to rent a car?

Not necessarily. Families staying in Papagayo, Playa Hermosa or an all-inclusive resort can arrange airport transportation and private day trips. A rental car is more useful when staying in an independent home and planning to visit restaurants, supermarkets and several beaches.

Should we bring our own car seat?

Bringing your own seat gives you control over its condition and installation. Some transportation companies can provide child seats, but you should request one in advance and confirm the type available before arrival.

What should we confirm before booking accommodation?

Ask about the crib, refrigerator, microwave or kitchen, laundry, air-conditioning, blackout curtains, hot water, stairs, elevator access, distance to the beach and proximity to a supermarket or pharmacy.

Can we combine Arenal and Guanacaste?

It is possible, but for a five-night vacation with a baby it may feel rushed. A more comfortable plan would be spending all five nights in Guanacaste and saving Arenal for a future trip with more time.
