You've picked a classic Costa Rica pairing: volcano and beach. The good news is the logistics are very manageable, and doing this leg by leg (rather than one long haul) makes the trip far more enjoyable. Here's roughly what to expect on the road.

From Liberia Airport (LIR) to Amor Arenal in La Fortuna, plan on about 2.5 to 3 hours. The drive winds past Lake Arenal for the final stretch, and it's genuinely scenic. From Arenal to the Waldorf Astoria at Punta Cacique on the Papagayo peninsula, budget roughly 3 to 3.5 hours. If you're heading back to LIR at the end, the airport is only about 30–40 minutes from the Papagayo area.

Where to Stop & What to Do Near Arenal

The Liberia–Arenal leg pairs nicely with a lunch or coffee stop. Many travelers break the drive near the lake or in a small town along the way to stretch, grab a fresh casado, and take in the views. On the Arenal side, you're right in the middle of Costa Rica's adventure heartland.

• Arenal Hanging Bridges (Mistico): A gentle, jaw-dropping walk through the rainforest canopy on suspension bridges — great for couples and first-timers who want nature without a hard hike.
• Hot springs: Volcano-heated thermal waters are the signature Arenal experience, and they're perfect after a travel day. A rainforest and hot springs outing is one of the most relaxing ways to spend an afternoon or evening.
• La Fortuna Waterfall, wildlife walks, and volcano viewpoints round out the options if you have an extra day.

Because Amor Arenal sits close to town and the national park, you're never far from any of this. On the way over to Papagayo, some travelers ask to route through the Guanacaste lowlands and simply enjoy the changing scenery as the rainforest gives way to drier tropical dry forest near the coast.

Our Take on September (Green Season)

September is deep green season, and honestly, we love it. Mornings are often clear and bright, with rain building in the afternoons — so the trick is timing. Do your hanging bridges, waterfalls, and boat activities in the morning, and save hot springs (which are wonderful in the rain) for later in the day. Showers tend to be passing bursts rather than all-day drizzle, and the landscape is at its lushest, with fewer crowds.

Rain rarely cancels a well-planned day; it mostly reshuffles the order.
