Rincon de la Vieja was unlike anything I expected. The fumaroles and mud pots were genuinely otherworldly — steam rising through the forest floor, the ground bubbling right next to the trail. Our guide knew every corner of the park and made it feel like a private expedition rather than a tourist walk.
We did the PLUS option with the hot springs and volcanic mud and it was the highlight of our whole Costa Rica trip. The waterfall was stunning, the park trail was incredible, and ending the day in the thermal pools was perfect. The guide was bilingual, knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about the park.
We brought our kids aged 9 and 12 and they were completely captivated. Seeing active volcanic features up close — something you simply cannot replicate anywhere else. The private format meant we went at our own pace, stopped when we wanted and had the guide entirely to ourselves. Lunch was also excellent.
