Choose Your Adventure

Choose between visiting the breathtaking La Fortuna Waterfall or exploring the scenic trails of Arenal Volcano National Park, depending on the experience that best suits your adventure.

♨️

Natural Hot Springs

End your day relaxing in naturally heated volcanic hot springs surrounded by tropical rainforest, the perfect reward after a day of exploration.

  • Difficulty: Medium. Both options involve walking on uneven, natural terrain in a live rainforest environment.

  • Classic — La Fortuna Waterfall: The descent and ascent involve approximately 500 steps on a steep trail. Guests should have good mobility and a reasonable level of fitness. This section is not suitable for guests with significant knee or joint conditions.

  • Plus — Arenal National Park: Involves hiking on forest trails that can be muddy and uneven. The terrain is more accessible than the waterfall stairs but still requires sturdy footwear and comfortable movement on natural ground.

  • Arenal's rainforest receives significant rainfall year-round. Light rain gear is recommended regardless of season.
  • Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes or trail shoes. The waterfall stairs and National Park trails are natural surfaces — sandals and flip-flops are not safe for either.

  • Pack a light rain jacket or poncho. The Arenal rainforest earns its name — brief showers are common at any time of year and are part of the environment's magic.

  • Apply insect repellent before departure and bring a travel-size bottle for reapplication on the trail.

  • A camera or binoculars for the Bogarin Trail wildlife walk will significantly enhance the experience — sloths are far more compelling through a zoom lens.
  • We understand that travel plans may change. Our cancellation policy for tours and day experiences: cancellations made 7 or more days before the tour date receive a full refund. Cancellations made between 48 hours and 6 days before receive a 50% refund. Cancellations made less than 48 hours before the scheduled experience are not eligible for a refund, although exceptional situations may be reviewed individually.

No-show reservations are charged in full. Guests are granted a complimentary waiting period of up to 1 hour after the scheduled pickup time; beyond this period, the booking will be considered a no-show.

Tour rescheduling must be requested at least 24 hours in advance.

Guest safety is our priority. Experiences affected by National Park closures or severe weather conditions will be rescheduled whenever possible. If rescheduling cannot be arranged, a full refund will be issued.

We chose Classic and the La Fortuna Waterfall was genuinely one of the most overwhelming things I have ever seen. No photograph does it justice — 70 metres of water in full voice, and you are standing right there in the mist at the base of it, completely unable to speak. The 500 steps down are real, and the 500 steps back up are also very real, but neither matters in the slightest once you arrive. The sloths on the Bogarin Trail and the hot springs afterwards completed a day I will never forget.

We took Plus and hiked into Arenal National Park itself — walking across an actual lava field with the volcano visible through the canopy above us. Our guide knew every sound in that forest and stopped us three times to point out animals we would have walked straight past. Afterwards, sinking into a thermal pool surrounded by jungle at the end of that day was almost surreal. Wild Papagayo made the very early pickup feel completely seamless — there was breakfast on the way, coffee in the van, and I barely noticed the three-hour drive.

Our children are eight and eleven and both of them will tell anyone who asks that the sloth on the Bogarin Trail was the best thing that happened to them in Costa Rica. We were close enough to see it blink. The waterfall was extraordinary and our youngest actually counted every one of the steps on the way back up. The hot springs at the end were perfect — warm water, jungle all around, the volcano just visible in the distance. An exhausting, magnificent, completely unforgettable day.
