The hike to Río Celeste inside Tenorio Volcano National Park fills about 9 hours and is rated Moderate; lunch and the park fee are included. Driving time from Nekajui to Río Celeste is about 114 to 146 minutes, the longest of the measured drives. Every option here is a full day, so the decision is how much of it you spend on the road. The ranges overlap, so read them as a rough guide.

• Around 1.5 to 2 hours: Buena Vista (91–116 minutes), Rincón de la Vieja (97–124 minutes) and the Bijagua area for Sloth Adventure & Chocolate (100–128 minutes).
• Around 2 hours or a little more: Río Celeste (114–146 minutes).

Very Long Days

Arenal and La Fortuna are the outer edge: about 176 to 224 minutes of driving from Nekajui, with tours of about 12 hours. Monteverde is not measured from Nekajui; the general Papagayo-area figure is about 3 hours each way and a 12-hour day, covered in our Monteverde guide.

• A longer scenic day: Río Celeste, if you are comfortable with the drive and a hike.
